As a freelance cameraman based in Stockholm, I’ve worked with international clients and major institutions across Scandinavia. Here’s what US-based producers, directors, and production companies should know before booking a camera operator in this part of the world.

You’ve got a shoot in Stockholm, Oslo, or somewhere along the Norwegian coastline — and you need a reliable, experienced camera operator on the ground. From the US, coordinating international production can feel complicated. But it doesn’t have to be.

Why Hire Locally in Scandinavia?

Flying a crew from the US to cover a story or corporate shoot in Sweden, Norway, or Denmark is expensive and time-consuming. A local camera operator cuts travel costs, eliminates jet lag delays, and brings something no out-of-town crew can offer: genuine knowledge of the region. I know the light in Stockholm in January. I know how to navigate permit requirements in Oslo. I know where the best angles are in Tromsø — and I know how to stay warm enough to actually use them.

High-Profile Work: On Location in Tromsø

One of the projects I’m most proud of took place aboard the Norwegian Coast Guard vessel KV Bjørnøya in Tromsø, Norway. I was commissioned to document the official visit of Kaja Kallas — High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission — as part of her programme with the Norwegian Armed Forces.

The footage was produced for and published by the European Commission’s official audiovisual service. It’s the kind of assignment that demands precision, discretion, and the ability to work within strict security protocols while still capturing compelling, documentary-style visuals.

Most of my US-based clients fall into a few categories: news organisations needing a stringer in Scandinavia, corporations with offices or events in the region, documentary producers looking for a local shooter, and PR or communications agencies handling European campaigns.

Whatever the brief, I work to broadcast standards and am comfortable shooting solo or as part of a larger crew. I bring my own professional kit and can also source additional equipment or crew locally when needed.

Working Across Scandinavia

While I’m based in Stockholm, I regularly work across Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland. Scandinavia is a relatively compact region when you know how to move around it, and I’m used to jumping on short-notice assignments anywhere from the Arctic Circle to Copenhagen.

Time zones are straightforward for US clients: I’m 6 hours ahead of Eastern Time, which means morning calls in New York work perfectly for briefings before I head out to a shoot.
